HERMIT CRAB ROOMMATES

I recorded this song after I read an article on the recording of Gold Panda's new album Lucky Shiner. The song was almost completely recorded using an old casio ct-680, with the exception of the bass and snare drum and the vocal part. It was an attempt at some lo-fi recording, all the fuzz and cracks are left in on purpose to add texture.

MANIAC - GIVE IT UP (WOLVES REMIX)

I saw this remix (contest?) up on AP.net and thought I'd give it a shot. The song was kind of a wacky, but I had some good ideas for it. The big challenge was that the vocals really didn't match the style I was going for, so I just stripped out the two parts that I really liked and looped those. There was also a bunch of hoops and hollers in the song, and i took little pieces of those and made a pattern which kind of became the verse vocals. I'm particularly proud of the transition from the first chorus to the second verse, it came off pretty seamlessly which rarely happens with my songs.

The contest(?) required you submitting a youtube response video so here is my youtube video with some slightly different artwork. Make sure to check it out in HD as well as the link to the soundcloud version below.

Ice Cream Social - Beyond Time

I'm proud to announce the release of Ice Cream Socials New Album Beyond Time. It's another short one, but it's all awesome. Check it out...

ICE CREAM SOCIAL - BEYOND TIME
Beyond Time is a narrative set in the distant future, beginning with a cosmic conflict, leading into a peacefully unaware midnight metropolis and finally ending in its inevitable obliteration. The battle for our homeland is lost once and for all.

Well it's my birthday today, but I decided to give you a gift instead of me getting one. I'm giving out my new EP Precipice for free.

I decided to do this EP because I was working on a new sound for my music, but it was going to be along time before I actually finished the full length so I decided to do a couple more songs specially for an EP to be released as a sort of precursor to the full length which is called Mountain Range which should come out some time next year. The sound on this album is a little bit more aggressive and straight forward then the stuff that's going to be on Mountain Range. It's kind of a perfect transition from the stuff I've been doing to the stuff I'm working on now (even though I didn't really mean it to be that way).

I was really influenced by a couple things while working on this EP. Most notably the musical stylings that appear on the new 65daysofstatic album, and the new Fuck Buttons Albums. That really heavy rhythmic sound with perfect synthisization. Another thing that really got me going on this album was I started to listened to a lot of 8-bit artists, particularily the band Starscream. Even though it may not jump out at you I tried to throw a little bit-y-ness into each song. And Lastly I started to really work with sampling, I used it mostly for vocals (because I can't really sing), but the good ole Lion, Roar! also helped me out on the song Architeuthis.

If you're still on the fence you can stream the song Earth Turtles over at my soundcloud:

THYME TRAVEL

The ep is a little behind schedule (mostly likely it'll be out next weekend), so I decided to release one of the tracks I've been working on for my next album. It's a lot different from what's on the ep, as well what I'm working for my full length. This is just some music I'm screwing around with in the meantime. It uses some samples from Simon and Garfunkel's song Scarborough Fair, and there is some original stuff in there. You can expect an album of about 8 or 9 tracks like this near the end of the year. I don't have a title for the album yet, but the temporary title I'm using is Weathered.

LOCAL NATIVES - CAMERA TALK (WOLVES REMIX)

I was browsing Hype Machine the other day and saw a banner ad for Local Natives advertising that they had stems available for download. They had four songs to choose from, and instead of picking the one that I liked the best. I actually just picked the one that had been done the least amount of times, and it turned out it was the song Camera Talk (which actually hadn't been remixed at all at that point), so i decided to do that one. It turned out to be a great choice because it had an awesome strings part, and a really moody chorus.

FISCHERSPOONER - INFIDELS OF THE WORLD UNITE (WOLVES REMIX)

So apparently I have the worst luck when it comes to remix contests. First it was the Kristen Wiig/Macgrubber one getting closed a week early, and now this. I just got an email saying that my remix for the Green Shoe Laces/Dim Mak remix contest got rejected. I'm not sure why, but as far as I can tell, it's because I live in California, and for some reason people in California can't enter. No idea why. Here's the remix any way.

Update: I resubmitted, and for some reason they excepted it this time. Go figure.

Ice Cream Social - Fathoms + Remixage

I met Sam (Ice Cream Social) through our mutual friend Devin (Lion, Roar!). I started checking out his blog, and listening to the songs he posted as he made them. They caught my ear, but it wasn't until after I finally talked him into sending me his full album that I truly recognized his genius.

Fathoms is 13 minutes and 24 seconds of pure music magic. A fully realized instrumental concept album (which is no small feat). I offered my services as a designer and ended up doing the artwork for the album. I did the world map (above) and cover (below). Now check out the album:

There isn't much to say here since I did a play by play on pretty much every track on this album. If you've been following the remixes as they come out this is still worth a look. About half the tracks have been re edited, and this also includes an extended version of the Passion Pit Sleepyhead remix.

THE NU WAVE - MY FAVORITE DRUG (WOLVES REMIX)

I stumbled across The Nu Wave one day while surfing ap.net's free music Friday. Their EP was a ton of fun. Every song was catchy as hell. I contacted them almost immediately and asked them if they were interested in me doing a remix for them. It turns out they were.

This was one of those remixes where after I finally got it to a good place I spent a good week or two tweaking to get it just right. The guitar was particularly hard to integrate, because so much of the remix is electronics, I just couldn't get it to jive with the rest of track, and none of my usual tricks were working. Finally I just sat and listened to the guitar track by itself for a while. I found one part in particular really caught my interest. In the end I only used about 2 seconds of the whole guitar clip, and just looped it backwards and forwards a ton of times. I was really inspired by dubstep for this one, and listened to a lot of slugabed and numbernin6 while working on this. I loved how the verse bass line came out.

Up dates

I'm gonna give a little update here. I just spent an hour looking at photos for the covers of my next two albums. Above this is a little taste of the art coming up. I'm also working on my last remix for vol.3 which of Nu Wave's Favorite Drug. So I'm chugging along.
Now onto the krux of this post. I've got plans to release 3 albums this summer. One every month, here is the tentative release schedule as of now:

+Late in June I'm looking to put out Wolves Remixes Vol.3. You can already score most of the tracks off my website, but the final product should have slightly better versions than are already out there. As well as them being neatly arranged by me.

+In what will probably be early July I'm going to drop my Ocarina Of Time megamix called Ocarina Orchestra. The album is five tracks with an additional track that mixes all the songs together into one long mix. Here's the tracklisting, It actually gives clues to some of the main samples I use for each song.
Part. 1 Kokiri Melody
Part. 2 Lost Woods Lullaby
Part. 3 Stormy Windmill Waltz
Part. 4 Geruedo Valley Grind
Part.5 Temple Of Time Tango
Ocarina Orchestra Mix

+The last release will be sometime in August and is an EP full of brand new material. The EP is called Precipice, and will act as sort of a precursor to the album I'm going to be putting out next year called Mountain Range. It's a completely new style for me, and it's very different than my last album.

Little extra bonus. Here's what I'm currently spinning:
A-Trak - Dirty South Dance 2

mc chris - mc chris Goes To Hell

Tokyo Police Club - Champ

Chemical Brothers - Further

Asher Roth - Asleep In The Bread Aisle

RAC x Holy Rollers

Ratatat - LP4

INNERPARTYSYSTEM - DIE TONIGHT, LIVE FOREVER (WOLVES REMIX) and other shiz

I bought a Korg KP3 the other day. It's pretty much reinvigorated the way I do remixes. Working with the XY pad makes it feel more like a live recording, and less like just reworking someone else song. It's also found it's way into my live set up. All around it was a pretty solid buy.I was using the KP3 with my microkorg today. I've mostly been using it for remixing, but I was using it today to make a more unique sound on a new song I'm working on. It makes things a little more interesting.

Oh, and here is something else:
This is an old one that I just never got around to posting. It's not really one of my most inspired remixes, but I think it's a fun one. It's a bumper.

Slugabed

I randomly stumbled across Slugabed. I was browsing myspace and saw him on somebody else's top 8 (or whatever it's called nowadays). He's part of a genre which I believe is called post-dub-step. His music is head scratching to say the least. He creates vastly unique sounds that are always interesting sounding. The thing that is really strange about him is what I heard elsewhere described as his off kilter beats. All of his music doesn't neccesarily seem like it's in time with all the other elements. When you listen to the song Quantum Leap it doesn't seem like all the elements are really moving at the same tempo, but it all somehow works. Sometimes I can't tell if Slugabed knows nothing about music, or he's a music genius.

Make sure to check out his new ep Ultra Heat Treated. And his remixes of Rick James - Superfreak, and ODB - Got your money. As well as this remix of La Roux.

Synth Army & Other Stories

As far as my actual music is going. I'm a in a little bit of a funk at the moment. I can't quite make anything that sounds right, Hopefully the new tools will help with that. The Ocarina Of Time remix project is coming along. I've got the basics of each track constructed, and I need to refine them all and then compile them all into one big mix. Oh yah. I need to name it as well. I let my brother listen to a bunch of bits from it, and he didn't seem to hate it, so that's a good sign.

I haven't been recording much original stuff recently. The files for my new song got corrupted due to user error, so I pretty much have to scrap that song (it's ok though, it wasn't that great, I was already thinking about relegating to being a b-side). I think I'm going to start recording some new stuff this week though.

I still need to get that Kid Cudi remix out as well. Hopefully sometime in the next week or two. I kind of want to wait to work on it until I get my KP3. In other news...

Just bought a (kinda) new synthesizer. It's a casio CZ-3000. It's a beast. Found it used at Guitar Showcase for just over a 100 bucks. I also included a pic of all my synths in one area. I picked up a Korg KP3 off of eBay as well. That should be coming in the mail some time soon.

I got a ton of new music yesterday, and I thought I'd post what I'm listening to at the moment:

Titus Andronicus - The monitor

Starscream - Future And It Doesn't Work

Slugabed - Ultra Heat Treated EP

Minus The Bear - Omni

Holy Fuck - Latin

Four Year Strong - Enemy Of The World

Anamanaguchi - Dawn Metropolis

MUMTAZ NECK TATZ (four year strong VS ratatat)

I've been really digging the new Four Year Strong album, and the more I listened to it the more I realized that there was a ton of stuff to sample from it. I decided it'd be great for a mash-up, it took me a long time to come up with mixing it with Ratatat, but I think the result turned out pretty good.

Journey & Destination

This has been an eternity in the making. I've been working on this album for two plus years. I recorded the initial set of about 8 demos in the first six months, and then spent about another year just making songs here and there. And then after that I spent another 6 months just kind of tweaking here and there. This album is still far from perfect, but I came to the realization, that if I kept trying to make it perfect, that it would probably never get released. So I bit the bullet and decided that this is as good as it's going to get right now.

The title and general theme of this album is the idea that some people believe in the journey of life and that some people believe in the destination. How for some people it's all about the experiences you have while living, and for some some people it's all about working toward an End Result and they don't care how they get there, just as long as they do. I've tried to decide what kind of person I am, and I've come to realization that I'm a little of both, which made for an interesting musical theme for this album. If you look at the song titles, artwork and content of the album a little more closely you might find a little bit more there than you'd think. Every thing on this album was very intentional, and thought out.

When I made Homage Collage I had just started getting into electronic music more, and when I started DJing I got insanely into electro, which is where a lot of my inspiration for this album came from. Even though I wouldn't really consider this an electro album. In my eyes it's much more of an electronic rock album. Which has always kind of been the type of music I make. Check the inspiration section to get a pretty big list of the stuff I was listening to while making J&D. I spent so many days walking around with my ipod on listening to Toxic Avenger, and Justice trying to figure out how they made the sounds they did. The whole album is kind of a love letter to all those electronic artist that I've been banging my head too for these past few years.

This album is a big change in sound from my first album Homage Collage, and my next album (which yes, I am already working on) is going to be an even bigger leap. It's kind of strange releasing this album now because I feel like my music has already really evolved past the sound presented on this album, and for a brief period I actually considered never releasing this. It all came down to a question of Journey & Destination for me. If the experience of making these songs was enough or if I needed something to show for it. In the end I decided that I'd spent way to much time and energy to banish this album to my archives. So here it is finally. Enjoy.

DADA music

This album is kind of more of a compilation or anthology of sorts. DADA music is basically a collection of the best mash-ups I've done over the past five years. It all started a long time ago back during my days in Who-Rey-Grad. I was making these mixtapes that I called Heironymous Machine. I did two and started working on a third one (which I worked on for about 2 years and subsequently never finished). Recently I realized I had all this music just sitting on my computer and some of it wasn't half bad, so I decided to put all the stuff that was any good together and release it as an album under my wolves moniker. All the tracks have been tweaked and retouched so if you had somehow came across the original stuff, these version should be a lot better.

The name Dada music come from the DADA movement in which artist took things out of magazines and newspapers and made art pieces out of them. An eerily similar process compared to how I construct my mash-ups. These are definitely not your traditional mash-ups (not to pat myself on the back for doing something original, but to warn you that these may not be what you would traditionally expect to hear when you hear the phrase mash-up). Another little disclaimer, like I said before a lot of this stuff is super old an even though I polished every, thing it's all still a little rough, but that's kind of half the fun of it, so be gentle. Well enough of my ramblings, below are all the liner notes and links to downloads:

BRIAN BEYKE - JOEL (AUTUMN)(WOLVES REMIX)

The thing that really stood out about Brian Beyke for me was that I thought it was so cool that he was doing this big post rock sound by himself. The other thing I thought was amazing about his music was that even though it was rather minimal, each of the songs had parts that really drew you in. Each song had an individuality to it with some sort of special element that keeps what is a rather acute sound from blending together.

This remix went through a lot of transformation while I was working on it. The first two or three versions I did were over 6 minutes long, and it just wasn't quite working, so even though it was going to be a ton of work, I tore the whole thing down, and started over again. The thing I'm always trying to do with remixes is make something that sounds completely different from the original. With this one I tried turning a slow lilting song into a slightly more upbeat atmospheric electronic song. It's probably going to sound really out of place on my next remix album, but here you go:

Live_TEST 02.14.10

Over the last couple weeks I've been developing a live a show, and the other day I recorded one of my studio sessions. It's hard trying to play electronic music live, and there are a lot of different ways to do it. I developed my live show from what I've seen from a lot of different artists like Ratatat, Simian Mobile Disco and Fuck Buttons. This is almost all new music, and this is a good indication of what my next album is going to sound like. It's a good half an hour, so sit back, relax and enjoy.

Fuck Buttons

Fuck Buttons was one of those groups that I heard whispers about for a while before I actually checked them out. I'd given them a couple cursory glances in the past, but a couple months ago I finally sat down and listened to Tarot Sport, and was totally blown away. Fuck Buttons does what is so hard to come by in music today, they make original music, that while it's influenced by things in the past, doesn't try to imitate anything.

Their musical style is something like Explosions in Sky meets MSTRKRFT. A style I like to call Postro (Post Rock + Electro). Unfortunately I haven't seen them live , but from what I've seen online they have an amazing live show, that translates exactly to what they do on the album by layering what seems like tons of midi synth arpeggios. They've got some killer remixes as well, and I hope they start doing more in the future, make sure to check out their remix of Fever Ray's If I Had A Heart. All in all do yourself a favor and check out Tarot Sport.

TEAMNATE - DO WHAT WE SAY (WOLVES REMIX)

While I was looking for some new music the other day I stumbled across the group TeamNate. I downloaded their demo CD. After a listen or two I found that I kept getting their song Do What We Say stuck in my head, so I ended up contacting to see if they'd be interested in me doing a remix and it turns out they were.

Well that's the story of how it happened, as far the actual remix itself here is some of the thought process. I don't really have a signature style like a lot of other remix artist do, so when I do a remix I tend to just try and do something really different from the original. With the TeamNate remix I tried taking an upbeat dance and making it into a heavy slow song, and here it is:
